Selling online is a great way of getting your products out there and there are a lot of different sites and platforms that will allow you to create an online shop or to take orders without having to leave the house.
I recently had a chat with some crafters and makers who had not made the leap to creating a shop of their own; I thought it might be handy to share my experience of creating a storefront and what has worked for me since STACIE SWIFT began...
Etsy was the marketplace that really seemed right for the fledgling STACIE SWIFT brand when I began selling cards in 2011 and I am happy to say that now, three years on, my Etsy shop continues to be the main source of all my sales.
Here's how the basics work:
- Etsy allows shop owners to sell Handmade, Vintage or Supplies.
- For each item you list in your shop Etsy will charge a fee of $0.20, you pay this in a monthly bill
- When your item sells a charge of 3.5% of the price is added to your bill (35p for every £10 you sell)
- You give each item a title and can tag each listing with up to 13 keywords - these are all things that make your products easier to find in searches.
- As Etsy is open to sellers and buyers worldwide products reach customers from all over the world, not just those who are aware of your products already.
- You can keep track of where your traffic is coming from and which keywords people are searching for using the Shop Stats page of your shop (this comes in very handy!)
Treasuries, Newsletters and Teams:
- Etsy Treasuries are a great way of grouping together your favourite products and sharing these collections with other users, someone choosing one of your items for their treasury can really boost the views to your store.
- Etsy includes a treasury on it's front page each day - if your item gets featured here it can really drive traffic to your shop and raise awareness of your product.
- A variety of themed product newsletters are mailed out each day by Etsy ... if your item is included in one of these this too can end up being fab promotion and really raise awareness of your products.
- Networking via the Etsy teams is a great way of keeping in touch with other like-minded sellers, it can also be a good way of creating new treasuries and being involved in events and activities.
- The Etsy Seller Handbook has lots of useful articles, featured sellers, and handy tips that can be a great resource for making a success of your shop.
- You can add an option to allow custom orders requests to your shop - great if you make bespoke items or offer commissions.
- You can copy an existing listing and edit accordingly if you sell lots of similar items (this is so handy when I am listing lots of cards!)
- Each listing can have variants too, for example all of my prints listings have an A5, A4 and A3 option.
- The Etsy App is fab for using on the go and means you can reply to customers at any time, anywhere.
- Customers are able to leave Reviews which is great for finding out what you are doing well - and also instills confidence in other people who want to shop with you :)
