Friday Favourites: Illustrator Emma Block

The second of my Friday Favourites is fellow Middlesex BA Illustration graduate and illustrator Emma Block.

Emma was kind enough to take time out from illustrating her second and third children's books to answer a few questions and give us a peek into the life of a freelance illustrator. She was also kind enough to add to the collection of pets on this blog with this fab photo of her with her dog!

As an ever busy illustrator, what is your creative process… do you keep sketchbooks or mood boards?

My work always starts in sketchbooks. When I get a new project I start by writing down the details of the project (budget, dimensions, deadlines etc.) and begin sketching. I scan work from my sketchbooks to show clients, and by using tracing paper and light boxes my sketches form the basis of my artwork.

·
What is your desk or work space like?
After years of working in my bedroom it’s so nice to have a dedicated studio space. I like to have all my work things around me; all my pencils, paint brushes and pens are on my desk next to my mac, with my printer, scanner, lightbox, sketch books and paints on the shelves next to me. I always like to work near to window so I have lots of light.

·        What are your must-read blogs?
Design Sponge, Illustration Rally, Miss Moss (http://www.missmoss.co.za/), A Future Present (http://afuturepresent.com/), Wish Wish Wish (http://wishwishwish.net/), Shiny Thoughts (http://www.shinythoughts.net/), What Olivia Did (http://www.whatoliviadid.com/) and the Laura Ashley blog.

·        Which piece of work are you most pleased with?
I think my Style Icon series is my favourite. It’s something I’ve really enjoyed doing and something I’d like to take much further.

·      What are your favourite shops for handmade items?

You can see more of Emma's work on her website, blog and in her very own Etsy shop - I have my eye on this print... so pretty!
